Richard Wender, MD, a practicing family physician, is alumni professor and chair of the department of family and community medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia. Wender directed the Family Practice residency program at Thomas Jefferson for 10 years and thereafter became vice chair and then chair of the department.
In addition to being a practicing family doctor, Wender's major area of academic focus has been cancer prevention and screening. He was the editor of the American Cancer Society Primary Care Physicians Newsletter for 10 years and is now on the Editorial Advisory Board of CA: a Cancer Journal for the Clinicians and for Patient Care.
Wender began his volunteer work with the Society in the early 1980s. He received the Society's St. George Medal, and the National Divisional Award in 1996. He was previously president of the Society's Philadelphia Division, the first president of the Pennsylvania Division, and is an at-large member of the Society's National Board of Directors.
