Anna Johnson-Winegar, PhD, a Society volunteer for almost 30 years, began her work at the unit level, serving on the Frederick County Board of Directors for a number of years, chairing many of the local committees. She then was elected to the Board of Directors of the former Maryland Division and served as President of that Division as well as chairing key committees, including both Finance and Patient Services. In 1994 she was awarded the St. George Medal for her work in the Maryland Division. She was a charter member of the Board of Trustees for the newly merged Mid-Atlantic Division and served as its President. She is currently an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees for the South Atlantic Division.

Prior to her retirement from government service in 2003, Johnson-Winegar was deputy assistant to the U.S. secretary of defense, where she acted as the single focal-point responsible for: oversight, coordination and integration of the chemical/biological defense; counter-proliferation support; chemical demilitarization; and assembled chemical weapons assessment programs. In 1998, she received the lifetime achievement award from Women in Science and Engineering. Upon retirement from civil service, she received several awards, including the Department of Defense Superior Service Award and the Gold Medal from the National Defense Industrial Association.
