Founded in 1913, the American Cancer Society is the largest voluntary health organization in the world. The organization mobilizes more than two million volunteers across the nation. With chartered divisions throughout the country and over 3,400 local offices, the Society's mission is to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
With a nationwide community presence, the Society is uniquely qualified to lead the voluntary cancer control effort. Since 1946, the Society has invested more than $2.7 billion in research, funding 38 Nobel Prize winners, often early in their careers before they had received recognition and monetary support for their work.
